Cherokee Mills Civil War Skirmish – 151 years ago today.

A skirmish between soldiers from the 123rd Illinois and 6th Georgia cavalry took place at Cherokee Mills (McConnell’s Mill at that time) on June 16th, 1864.

The Union soldiers stopped by to forage and, more than likely,  make a statement after a Union supply train of wagons and prisoners taken by Confederate cavalry near Cassville, camped here some weeks before.

The exchange left one Confederate soldier dead.
