Dautzenlein: The Most Basic Element of Common Sense

What is “common sense” and what do Dautzenleins have to do with it?

What is Common Sense?

Definition:

“Sound judgment not based on specialized knowledge”[1]

There it is!   Common Sense is sound judgment not specialized knowledge.

What is “judgment”?

Definition:

2.a. “The mental ability to perceive and distinguish relationships”[2]

So Common Sense could be said to be:  The mental ability, not based on specialized knowledge, to perceive and distinguish relationships.

And what are Dautzenleins?

That’s right, they are “the connections of people, places, things, dates, and events” ie. relationships.

As a Dautzenleiner, one observes what is there, examines and investigates connections (relationships), and connects the dots to distinguish the big picture. Dautzenleins are Common Sense applied to life!

It’s just this simple to learn and use Common Sense… just Dautzenlein things!

The Dautzenlein is the most basic element of Common Sense!

“Time” – a dot or a line?

Time is a very interesting element of life. Technically it exists only as a construct of man, not nature.

A continual flow of Past to Present to Future appears to be a part of nature. The quantification and measurement of that, however, is solely the creation of man.

Another aspect of man’s view of Time is the “time stamp”. This can be Year, Date, Hour, or Elapsed Time, etc. related to a person, place, thing, or event.

In relation to Dautzenleins, time as motion or timeline can be viewed as a line, while time as a “stamp” may be viewed as a dot.

Chronological treatments of history will often relate people, places, things, and events to a specific timeline, using Time as the “Line” connected to each dot.. For certain studies, this is a very practical way to view things. Be aware however that this method has a tendency to subordinate other Dautzenlein connections to that Time-line. It suggests that Time is the major factor of history and often ignores the real creators of history – people and their intentions.

For the most part, “Time” is like a disinterested spectator in a sports arena watching the participants of the game but having no influence on the game or the players. Time cannot cause anything, create anything, or act in any way… it’s just there!

Dautzenleiners view and use Time as a “stamp”, often, but time is rarely the main relevant dautzenlein connection.

People act or do things because they are motivated by their intentions. When they act they create, and their creations become history. Perhaps if we were taught to study “Intention-lines” instead of “Time-lines”, our understandings would come sooner and be much fuller and relevant.
